POSITION
It began with discovery in new materials and resources more than a century ago. We've been underwriting scientific discovery ever since.
We are small, deliberate, and led by people who have built companies themselves. We concentrate on a few breakout opportunities a year rather than many, and we prefer to be early and stay long.

Three disciplines, each with a precedent more than half a century deep.
What we invest in today is not a new thesis. It is the same set of questions the family has been funding for four generations.
1902
Material
Everything physical starts here. We go deep on metals, alloys, energy resources, advanced materials, and the industrial processes that let new things be made at scale.
Metallurgy
Our first generation trained as metallurgical engineers and helped bring nickel alloys to industrial scale. One alloy developed in those years is still specified for marine and chemical service more than a century on.
1956
Life
Biology under-researched or misunderstood. We obsess over precision medicine, genomics, neuroscience, and the parts of human health that funding has consistently passed over.
Sensory
Since 1956, we've funded science others hadn't reached yet. In 1967 we founded the Monell Chemical Senses Center, which is still the only independent institute in the world devoted to the science of taste and smell.
1959
Earth
The systems that decide whether a planet stays livable. We're drawn to ocean and climate dynamics, the geophysics of making extreme environments habitable, and the instruments and models that let us measure both.
Planetary
In 1959 we established what is now widely called the Nobel of the earth sciences, awarded for work that changes our understanding of the planet, its history, and its place in the universe. It has run for more than sixty years, and its recipients include the scientists who established plate tectonics and reconstructed the deep climate record.
